01/10/2012 |
Doncaster Racecourse has confirmed that legendary band Madness, led by iconic front man Suggs, will play at its Town Moor course on Saturday, June 30, as part of the Construction Index live music night, with the live concert after racing.
And tickets for the sure to be a sell-out event are now on sale via the racecourse’s website.
Known globally for their twenty-one top-twenty singles over seven years in the late seventies and eighties, including ‘One Step Beyond’, ‘It Must Be Love’, ‘House of Fun’, ‘Baggy Trousers’, ‘My Girl’ and ‘Our House’, the band’s sound developed from their early Ska roots and has set the tone for over three decades of complete Madness.
And it’s not the first time the boys from Camden Town have mixed it up in Doncaster. After the redevelopment at the course the band were the first live act to play there, wowing a packed house which they are set to do once again.
Mark Spincer, managing director of Doncaster Racecourse, said: “It’s fantastic to have signed Madness for our Live Music Night Race Meeting in June and I am delighted to announce that tickets are now on sale.
“The band always put on and incredible show, it’s amazing to see the crowd, young and old, dancing to classic Madness tracks, I’m sure they will be absolutely electrifying to watch live. With a packed evening of top class horse racing beforehand it’s going to be a great event for people to come and enjoy.”
Madness stated: "We're over the moon to be returning to Doncaster Racecourse. Our last gig at Doncaster Racecourse was in 2008 and we remember the massive crowd fondly. Four years on, we hear the people of Yorkshire want us back. We're working on our 10th studio album at the moment, which will be out later this year - so the Doncaster Racecourse crowd can expect all the favourites plus some new stuff too!"

Grove and Rufford Hunt @ The Crown Hotel Bawtry! |
12/27/2011 |
Crowds thought to be in excess of 1,000 flocked to see the Grove & Rufford depart from the Crown Hotel in the centre of the historic Nottinghamshire market town of Bawtry on Boxing Day, and we were there to capture the occasion on camera.
Around 75 riders were greeted by enthusiastic applause as the Hunt made its way along the main street at the sound of Huntsman Paul Larby's horn, shortly after 11am.
It was the first time in decades that the Crown Hotel had hosted the local Hunt. Managing Director Craig Dowie, whose daughter Antonia was among those mounted, told EMR: "It's been a genuine pleasure to host such a fantastic occasion. The atmosphere has been amazing."
The Hunt made its way to nearby Scaftworth where they were greeted by Morris Dancers outside the King William pub before heading out into the country.
Getting into the festive spirit was this youngster Lucy Baguley, left, of Retford. Her pony Lady was also dressed up as a hound! |

CROWN RIDER WRIGHT WINS HIGH PROFILE PRIZE |
10/19/2011 |
Crown Hotel, Bawtry-sponsored event rider Mathew Wright stole the limelight at the Horse of the Year Show by winning the valuable Express Eventing Final in front of a packed arena at Birmingham’s NEC.
Riding If You Want II, Retford based Matthew jumped his way to victory in an exciting, down-to-the wire finish to scoop the £12,500 prize and set the seal on a season that has brought him over 20 other eventing successes.
Sixteen of some of eventing’s most well-known names, including former Badminton and Burghley winner Oliver Townend, Australian eventer Sam Griffiths and Chinese Olympian Alex Hua Tian, battled it out for a share of the £40,000 Express Eventing Final prize pot.
But Matthew, who teamed up with Bawtry’s popular four-star hotel in the summer, supplemented his three wins in this season’s Express Eventing Qualifiers.
A delighted Mathew said: “The plan was to take all four qualifiers and the final, but the Festival of British Eventing qualifier just slipped away from me to Sam Griffiths. I’m truly delighted to have won here today, and the win is a huge credit to the whole team who’ve got the horse and myself ready. This is a great new concept for equestrian sport.”
Chinese Olympic eventer Alex Hua Tian was the runner up with Grafenstolz. The combination finished just 0.30 of a penalty point behind Matthew, and with Harry Meade in third.
The Express Eventing 2011 Final, following the format of the Qualifiers, consisted of three arena-based disciplines: freestyle ‘dressage to music’, cross country and showjumping. The riders at the Final were the very best of those who competed at the four Qualifiers held around the country.
The Express Eventing Series 2011 has had a total prize pot of £100,000 with approximately £15,000 being allocated to each Qualifier and £40,000 to the Express Eventing Final at Horse of the Year Show.

TOP TWO-YEAR-OLDS ADVERTISE THEIR CLASSIC CREDENTIALS IN THE RACING POST TROPHY ON SATURDAY AT DONCASTER |
10/17/2011 |
Britain’s final Group 1 race of 2011, The Racing Post Trophy for leading two-year-olds, is the principal race at Doncaster on Saturday (October 22) – the second leg of the two-day October Meeting on Town Moor. Racing on both days is scheduled to begin at 2-00 p.m.
First held 50 years ago in 1961, when known as The Timeform Gold Cup, The Racing Post Trophy over the straight mile boasts a fine pedigree, with Authorized, Motivator and High Chaparral all winning this race as juveniles in the last decade before going on to Derby glory at Epsom the following year. Also, the 2002 winner, Brian Boru returned to Doncaster to land the next year’s St. Leger. Saturday’s renewal continues to offer prize money of £200,000.
The powerful racing operations, such as Ballydoyle and Godolphin are sure to be represented in The Racing Post Trophy, as they seek to introduce a possible star in the making for next year’s big races, including the Classics.
Saturday’s seven-race programme also features a Listed race for two-year-old sprinters over six furlongs and a valuable sprint handicap contest over five furlongs, both held under the Racing Post banner. The Racing & Football Outlook Conditions Stakes (seven furlongs), The Jack Nolan 10th Anniversay Nursery Handicap Stakes (for two-year-olds) and a Handicap contest over one mile and a half supported by the Crown Hotel, Bawtry are also part of Saturday’s card.
The concluding race on Saturday is the Final of the UK’s ‘Hands & Heels’ Apprentice Series – a Handicap contest over seven furlongs contested by three-year-olds and supported by The Universal Recycling Company, based near Rotherham. This is the culmination of twelve races throughout the country, under The Racing Excellence Initiative, which began in May, to encourage young riders not to resort to the whip. Going into Saturday’s Final, Lucy Barry has an almost unassailable lead, after winning four races in the Series.
There are also seven races on Friday, starting with a contest for maiden two-year-olds, The EBF Mercedes-Benz of Doncaster Fleet Stakes, while other races for juveniles on the opening day are The EBF Spiffing Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer Maiden Fillies’ Stakes and The Earl Of Doncaster Hotel Nursery Handicap Stakes. Also featured on Friday are The Bentley’s Gentleman’s Club Doncaster Handicap Stakes (extended mile and a quarter), while The Racing Post put their name to a couple of competitive Handicap races – one for sprinters over six furlongs and the other over the straight mile.
In addition, the final 24 candidates in this year’s Racing Post/SIS Betting Shop Manager of the Year will be at the races on Friday; this is marked by The Racing Post/SIS Betting Shop Manager of the Year Handicap Stakes over the St. Leger distance of one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards. The overall winner will be announced in London next month and will receive a VIP trip to next year’s Dubai World Cup |

Crown Hotel Bawtry Wow guests at Restaurant Open Evening Launch!! |
09/28/2011 |
Wow – a word that truly sums up our experience at the Crown Hotel's restaurant open evening. Not only were we treated like Kings and Queens but were fed like ones too. Having been greeted by both Craig and Katey, we were welcomed into their rustic, recently renovated restaurant where we enjoyed three courses of exceptional food.
The restaurant itself has been decorated to create a warm, relaxing environment in which you can recline in leather booths and chat amongst the rustic, modern setting. As soon as we were at our table we were made to feel at home, and this relaxation is key in the enjoyment of the food.
What really grabbed us when choosing our meal is the wide variety; without there being too much choice so you don't even know where to start. Starters consist of sharing platters from different cultural cuisines, including Mediterranean and Asian, whilst single starters include something for everyone from bowls of Olives to a small portion of some of the main meals, e.g. Chicken Caesar Salad.
After some deliberation I chose Baked Camembert with rustic breads followed by the Chicken Breast with Pancetta and Bubble & Squeak and my partner the Duck Spring Rolls followed by Venison Haunch. Our appetites well and truly whetted we were keen to get started, and when our starters arrived we were not disappointed! My Camembert was melted to perfection and the infusion of rosemary and garlic really gave it the edge, whilst the duck spring rolls made such an impression on my partner, I've heard about them every day since!
Moving onto the mains our plates of food were incredibly well presented and the Mediterranean vegetables we ordered to go with them were cooked to perfection. Both the chicken breast and venison were incredibly tender and the mash (bubble and squeak with the chicken, root vegetable with the venison) entirely complimented the dish.
Finally, it wouldn't have been complete without a pudding and ordering the Chocolate Brownie and Caramel Bramley Apple Cheesecake we had just enough room left to enjoy these little delights. The brownie was served with white chocolate ice cream and the cheesecake with toffee chunk ice cream, we were in pudding heaven!
Needless to say we did roll home that night, but with a stuffed, satisfied feeling that neither of us have enjoyed for quite some time. Far too often you enjoy a meal that is OK, but you're not still talking about it the week after, and we're certainly still talking about the delights of The Crown. We were blown away, and not just because of the food but the warm atmosphere and staff.
It was clear that the staff were incredibly proud of the new restaurant and were keen to hear what our thoughts on each dish were – and obviously they weren't disappointed. Speaking to the chef we discussed the fact that some had commented the portions slightly too big, with us disagreeing wholeheartedly as both of us had cleaned our plates entirely (not quite sure what this says about us!) As we said they were 'Yorkshire Sized Portions' and the Yorkshire roots is something they have also captured, using local produce as their ingredients.
If you're wanting to go somewhere extra-special for that special occasion, or just fancy a bite to eat one weekend, I can only recommend The Crown. Un-rushed and in a relaxing environment, lie back in the leather couch, admire the modern art and glass lights and enjoy food that really is second-to-none.
A big thank you to all at The Crown and congratulations on creating a food experience that will be remembered for many months to come. |

Crown Hotel Bawtry Team put feet up after Charity Bike Ride!! |
08/03/2011 |
The five-man team of long distance cyclists from Bawtry’s Crown Hotel have completed their marathon fundraising Coast-to-Coast ride.
Staff members Des White, Codie Thompson, Micky Winter, Adam Hancock and Peter Ward pedalled the gruelling 150 miles of tracks and roads from Whitehaven to Tynemouth in three days to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.
Des, aged 37, form Tickhill, is used to tough tasks as for seven years he served in the Royal Navy as a weapons engineer - but he still found the big ride to be a real test.
He said: “The first day of riding took us the 55 miles from Whitehaven to Penrith and took in some really hilly terrain. It was a hard day during which I damaged the ligaments in my knee.
“It was just a question of keeping going over the massive hills on day two from Penrith to Allenheads during which we climbed 1,900ft over the summit of Hartshead.
“Day three was a long one of 75 miles but it was less hilly and it turned out to be a pleasant ride. I was a little nervous at the start of the ride, as I knew that it was going to be hard going. But I really enjoyed the entire experience and it was a fantastic feeling to have completed the ride.
“We were able to celebrate at the finish in Tynemouth by tucking into fish and chips.”
It was Bawtry man Micky Winter’s third fundraising Coat 2 Coast ride - and he is already planning next year’s expedition to Vietnam. |

Bars are putting in place red, white and blue bunting.
